Weathering Rocks

Second grade geologists performed a science lab to observe how the weathering of rocks influences the mass of rocks. Students used water bottles, water, and mesh strainers to speed up the weathering process. They used pan balances and gram weights to determine the mass of the rocks before and after each weathering step. Students used the data from their lab report to determine the total mass lost from their marble after 15 minutes of rock weathering. This messy and noisy lab allowed students to collaborate and ask questions, while integrating math into the science classroom.
